Mick Ronson's Custom Les Paul that we now all know and love was originally a ‘Black Beauty’. Mick had the paint stripped from the top surface in 1969 before leaving his band, the Rats, in Hull to embark on a historic journey with David Bowie as one of the Spiders From Mars. A fellow musician had suggested that the guitar’s high end might sound better if it could breathe, “so off came the paint”, and suddenly Ronno had the only Les Paul around with its natural wood exposed. The public first heard it played live on ‘The Width of a Circle’ during Bowie’s February 1970 session on BBC Radio’s John Peel show. By then, he was Bowie’s right hand man and would go on to create an incredible legacy on ‘The Man Who Sold the World’, ‘Hunky Dory’, ‘Ziggy Stardust’, ‘Aladdin Sane’ and ‘Pin Ups’.
Designed exclusively for John7Arts / Rock'n'Roll Redux by multimedia artist David Lloyd, an alumni of Central Saint Martins School Of Art and the Institute Of Contemporary Arts in London. Employing the Découpe (cut-up) technique in which written text is cut up and rearranged to create a different and perhaps unexpected new narrative, David has employed shards of lyrics to give discerning fans an opportunity to engage in 'discover the songs' beneath a foreground featuring an iconic and classic guitar. The Découpe concept can be traced back to at least the Dadaists of the 1920s, but was popularised in the late 1950s and early 1960s by writer William S.
