On a cold Christmas morning in Brooklyn, Norma Talmadge’s father walked out of the family home to buy food and never came back, leaving her mother to bring up Norma and her two sisters alone. Although her childhood was marked by poverty she went on to become one of the great stars of the silent movie era and retired, one of the wealthiest women in Hollywood. She died at her home in Las Vegas on Christmas Eve, 1957.
